Friday Nugget: Proven Late-Stage Interview Tip

Friday, August 8, 2008 by Mark Harbeke

Following up on my post this week talking about the impact of the Employee Free Choice Act – for which I got some great additional feedback from one of the sources I cited, HR consultant Michael Haberman – I wanted to provide a little more insight into how the Winning Workplaces-recognized leader I mentioned in it, Georgia Berner of Berner International, ensures a great workplace culture from the beginning: when interviewing job candidates.

Georgia BernerGeorgia joined a panel of six great speakers at the concluding session of our Top Small Workplaces Conference last year, "60 Ideas in 60 Minutes."  The moderator, PrintingForLess.com Founder/CEO and fellow Best Boss Andrew Field, kept the audience questions and panelists' answers to them moving at a brisk clip to reach the number of ideas promised in the session title.

One of the questions Andrew received from the audience was "What are some of your best interview questions?"  He immediately put his own spin on it for the panel:

What are some of the best ways to find out if a person has the right attitude, the right mind set?  Are they going to be the right cultural fit?  We have someone in the office who says, "They're never any better than they are on their interview day."  The corollary of that is, people can interview pretty well and cover up some of their toxic problems.

Georgia was first to provide an answer, in the context of late-stage interviews.  Listen to it below:

This is perhaps the best advice I've heard on this question, one that factors into employee engagement best practices (when it comes to both screening interviewees, and managing employees if the person is hired) as well as team building.

Leaders: How would you add to Georgia's answer?  What other tips do you have?
