Comments for 2009 Top Small Workplaces Judges Meeting Here Today

My biggest concern is you have no people of color on the judging staff. One of last year's winner has a major problem with lack of diversity in their recruitment and hiring. 99% of New Belguim Brewing employees are white, young, non-disabled. A model workplace if you're a white supremest.

I appreciate your comment, Laurie, but those are pretty strong words. I checked and according to the 2000 Census, Ft. Collins, CO (where New Belgium is based) is 82% white, and even more when you factor in African and native American, Hispanic and others who are mixed race with white being one of them. So their racial demographic is probably not out of line for their area. As far as the judging panel, I guess it just worked out this year that we have no people of color represented. We certainly did not try to exclude them. You will note that 3 of 8 judges are women. One more point I would add is that even if our 2009 TSW judging panel and New Belgium aren't as diverse as you'd like to see, I can show you photos we gathered from most of our other 2008 TSW winners that shows many African Americans, Hispanics and other non-whites in their workplaces. Drop us an email at info@winningworkplaces.org if you'd like to see these pics. Thanks.
